Trying to understand K-2006 Test Results

Hey everyone,

So I just received the Taylor K-2006 Test kit and I am having trouble understanding what needs to be done given the results. A little background beforehand, this was a foreclosed pool that I paid someone to drain, acid wash, and balance the PH. It’s been about two weeks since this now. The pool still looks great, but I don’t want to risk It. I also don’t trust pool stores. I took a sample to test and see what they said. They told me to put 2.5 gallons of liquid chlorine (10.5%), as well as have 2 chlorine floaters, and 5 pounds of calcium.

Basically, I got the K-2006 to try and use the BBB method in an attempt to save money. The results I have that I don’t understand are;

My FC test showed that there was no free chlorine in the pool, being that when I put two dippers of R-0870 the sample didn’t turn pink, It merely stayed the same clear color that It was.

The PH test showed a color darker than 8. Probably somewhere around 9, however, the scale on the testing kit only shows colors from 7-8.

The total alkalinity test took 18 drops to turn from green to red. Making the total alkalinity 180ppm.

Calcium hardness test required 20 drops to change from red to blue. Meaning that calcium hardness is 200ppm.

CYA test is about 35 ppm.

From what I understand and the inputs I’ve put into the calculator. I think the correct course of action would be about a gallon of bleach (6%) and muriatic acid?

Please let me know what you think. As you can see I’m a little lost. Thank you all in advance!

Yes....get 3-5 ppm of chlorine in the pool TODAY if possible. Next, lower your pH down into the mid 7's using muriatic acid.

As Dave said, your priority is getting chlorine in your pool and lowering your pH. Other items can be dealt with later.

If your pH tests over 8 then assume it is 8 and use PoolMath to calculate the dose to lower pH to 7.6. Test again in 30 minutes and repeat until you have pH in the 7's. You don't want to make big changes to the pH. Do it incrementally.

Hi! Thank you so much! My pool is 10,550 gallons. How much chlorine would that be to make It 3-5ppm?

Thank you so much! I read the ABC’s when I ordered the test kit a week ago but I’ll be sure to go through It again. My pool is 10,550 gallons. I’ll go and create the signature now! Again, thank you so much for the help

Real simple to remember - In 10,000 gallons 1 gallon of 10% liquid chlorine raises FC by 10 ppm. If you want 5ppm then 1/2 gallon. 3ppm is 1/3 of a gallon.

Well we didn’t see this reply unfortunately and added about a gallon and when we did the FC test It took 35 drops to turn clearkess which means it’s at like 100 ppm :/ we also put about half a gallon of muriatic acid and the PH looks better but still over 8

Slow down. pH test is invalid when FC is over 10. Do not add more acid.

A gallon of 10% chlorine would give you 10 ppm, not 100.

64 oz of 31% MA will lower your pH by 1.5 and TA by 25.

What sample size are you testing FC with?

Are you using PoolMath?

We really need details of your pool in your signature to suggest what to do next. Do you have a heater?

Hey, sorry about the late reply, so my pool is 10,550 gallons, I don’t know what kind of pool pump it’s using to be honest either a 1/2 HP or 1 HP (the guy that did the acid wash and balanced the PH originally said the pump should be running for 8 hours a day), it’s got a Hayward C1750 filter, no water heater, and anything else you need to know just feel free to ask. I don’t really know much more about It.

It’s an inground pool. It’s screened. It’s also made out of concrete.

Oh and we filled It up with the free reclaimed city water.
