Question on filter. Pool guy was saying stick withy size bc although you gotta clean prob once a month it's pretty easy. He suggested having multiple filters on hand and just swapping them and soakimgthe other in a cheap trashcan. He said alternative is dealing with bigger filter setup with 4 filters and although less cleaning they are more difficult to deal with. Any advice here? He's also a fan of heat pump over gas due to cheaper operating costs and possible longer lifetime reliability. I think I'm leaning gas due to this forum but open to opinions here too. Thanks!

He sounds like he's got extra stock of small filters he's trying to move. Stick with your guns.... no way does anyone want to have to clean a filter *monthly* if they don't have to.
If ever you were to get algae (G_d forbid!) a small filter will annoy you to no end by clogging up far quicker.
Go big or go home!
In your part of the country I would suggest gas over a heat pump.

That is unfortunate.. Did the PB take into account using up the dirt you will get from the pool dig when he figured the elevation for the pool. You will want to make sure the fiberglass pool gets backfilled with all 3/4 clean stone so you should have several loads of fill to disperse.
Yes they are using stone for backfill. One option we considered was not doing a raised Patio at all and then changing two of the sliders to windows and just having a single set of stairs.

Get the big filter and go gas. You are building the pool to enjoy not to constantly be swapping filter or saving a few dollars on gas.

By "dealing with" a quad filter (as your PB says), that means lifting 4 cartridges out and rinsing them. It's about as hard as lifting dishes out of the dishwasher. It's the easiest task I do around my whole house - I rinse thoroughly and it takes about 45 minutes start to finish - but less times per year is better. And this year I'm only doing it when I close, so one time - for 6 months of run time. My pressure rise using hair nets all year, an autocover about 30% of the season and a big filter lets me do that. Make your own calls on these things. It's OK if you agree with the PB, but it's your pool.

We are really rethinking the whole raised patio idea. Open to all suggestions and options. With two little kids I'd be concerned about taking the patio all the way to pools edge. Might just do steps directly down from the one set of sliders and just have a ground level patio, think that might open it up a bit since the pool is roughly 15' from the house (has to be due to set back rules in my township and our not very deep backyard). Then we would convert the other two sliders (that we never use) over to windows. Wifey's dream is the cascading staircase effect across all three sliders but that kills that space for a dining area. Decisions decisions.....and here I thought we had this all figured out

If you sell the older kid (j/k) you can afford to get an autocover. Those of us with them rate them right up there with the Speed Stir device as the best thing ever for pools. You can open it using a key and it will retract open/closed in a minute. Super safe!

We are also in NJ and looking at fiberglass pools—also considering the ultimate model from leisure pools! My husband found another company (can’t remember the name) that has a spa and ledge on the side, so we are also looking into that. Which company did you use?? Would love to hear more about your pool process!

We found a similar model from Latham however I don't think those spas had spillovers. I never owned a pool before but I anticipate that we will enjoy the sound of the running water and might be able to just heat the spa which will run to the rest of pool. Not sure if that's how it will work in the end but we were already leaning towards leisure and that kinda pushed us over the edge. Plus I believe the materials they use and warranty are up there with the best. There have been some good reviews and happy customers on this forum that helped me with my decision.
As far as my build goes, I hope they are back today to finish backfill and equipment pad. I think there is a large majority of people that wish their builder did a better job communicating and staying on schedule and I certainly feel that way right now. When they are here they are good/great. We interviewed 3 builders before making decision.

Do you mind sharing the quote and the builder? Looking for the same install and got an basic estimate of $55k just for the pool/install without swg/heater/patio. Did you see the pool in person before deciding on the ultimate?
I just sent you a PM on the quote and builder. My price was about that including SWG/heater/bond beam. I did not see the pool in person prior to moving ahead. My backyard is a little tight so I could only fit a 15' wide pool based on township setback rules so I feel like by limiting my options it was easier for us to make a decision.
I thought about that. We haven't sat in it yet but if you like those contoured seats then these aren't that. For us I think we will prefer the bench.
