Drain/refill during SLAM?

Hi all, I know you should take of balancing before starting SLAM however I didn't. I'm wondering if doing a partial drain and refill is an issue? I'm running a Hayward 4030 cartridge (430 sq ft) in a 14000 gallon pool with spillover spa. The previous owner had been using pucks and I foolishly continued since my previous pools have been SWG. Once a week the pool would accumulate some yellowy algae/pollen/dirt. I live in SoCal and back onto a hill so I wasn't totally sure if it's algae or just a pollen/dirt mixture. After a brushing and a shot of liquid bleach the pool would be clear again by the next day but I was doing this once a week. With my wife travelling this week i figured it was a good time to try SLAM. I ordered the k-2006 but before it arrived I started hitting the pool based on the chart and assuming a pretty high CYA. The pool looked clearer by the next day. My kit arrived on day 2 and my first test showed FC 22, CC 1, TA 120, CH 380 and CYA 120.
I used the calculator and added 4 1/2 gallons of chlorine (HDX 10%). I've been maintaining the high FC for a couple days nows, and last night I was around 34 or 36 FC (it was really dark out) and CC was .5. This morning FC was 31 and CC was .5 still. I added another 2 gallons of chlorine this morning to bring FC back up. I'd like to lower my CYA and CH with a water exchange. Sorry for the novel!

T,

I would drain and get your CYA down to 30 or 40 and then start your SLAM.. To me, it does not make sense to add chemicals to a pool that you know you are going to drain..

Thanks,

Jim R.

Better to drain too much than not enough.. You can always add CYA... :)

So I did what I could today, but don't have a valve in line to drain to waste. I rigged up a discharge using my waterslide pump but could only drain to the lowest side port on the pool. I have a valve ordered to solve that. My CYA dropped almost 40 and CH improved as well. On the sanitation side FC only dropped to 28 from this mornings 31 and CC is almost non existent - barely pink. I'm going to hold the FC another day or 2 and hope the valve comes in soon. I'll do another drain and fill after that and see where it stands. Thanks for the input Jim.

Hi all, just wanted to give another thanks to this forum. My family enjoyed a beautiful weekend in a sparkling pool. FC loss has been around 2ppm a day with weather in the 90's and hours of use. My valve arrives today and I will exchange some water to bring my CYA down again. We thought the water color we saw when we took over this pool was normal due to the pebbletec color. We were wrong! The water color and clarity has been transformed using the SLAM process. Again, thanks for the wealth of information on this site.
