As the title would suggest I had a catastrophic failure where my salt cell melted down,so I'm looking to convert back to chlorine. I'm just looking for advise as far as what I need for a chlorine pool we bought this house last August and it had the salt water system already and I've never owned a pool before this so I don't really know how chlorine pools get their chlorine lol. I bought chlorine tabs and the floating dispenser they go in is there anything else I need. So I really need to drain half the water out of the pool? I just did a water test and other than the chlorine being really low, the swg died Saturday morning, everything else looked pretty good.
Converting back to chlorine from a swg. What do i need to do?

To maintain your chlorine level, simply find a place that sells liquid chlorine (i.e. Walmart, Home Depot, etc) or buy "regular" bleach - same thing! Make sure the bleach is NOT splashless, scented, or Clorox brand. Use our PoolMath to help you figure out how much to add and make sure to keep the FC balanced to your current CYA as noted on the FC/CYA Levels.

SWG pools are chlorine pools. They just have the SWG for chlorination instead of adding chlorine some other way.

Your SWG is plumbed into your equipment, in most cases, the last item before returning to the pool. You mentioned “melted down”, is there flow? Or have you removed the melted cell and put a “blank” in its place?
Are you able to take a picture and post that here? The experts could help you get the cell replaced. Just a thought.

No, they were both powered by the same breaker. The cell was old to my knowledge 10+ years, I was running the pump a lot leading up to a party we were having, probably at least 24+ hours straight and the temps here went up by 20 degrees from what they were the week prior. I think that was enough to cause a failure in the cell which led to overheating and the eventual meltdown

I would replace it. You will get tired of adding liquid chlorine every day to your pool after the ease of SWCG.

I don't feel like the salt system was ever running properly. I would love to get a new swcg some day but this will do for now. I just don't have 1k+ to put into it right now
