Stenner pump turning off -overheating?

Recently installed a stenner 10gpd pump. Wired it to one leg of the 220 V timer that used to supply my booster pump to supply 110 V to the outlet for the stenner. Enclosed outlet and pump in a plastic box and mounted it to the wall. After running for a time, the pump will stop and not run until it cools off. I put everything in the box to keep the elements out., The outlet does not have a weatherproof cover. After I first noticed the issue, I put a couple of small holes in the bottom of the box, and a vent port on the side by where the motor fan is. Any suggestions on how to prevent the pump from overheating? I will try to attach photos or links.

Does it overheat if you leave the cover off of the box?

I ran it for about 45 mins with the cover off and it didn't stop. Haven't had a chance to do a longer test.

If it runs with the cover off, then you likely cannot run the Stenner inside of this enclosure. You can mount the Stenner outside in the open with a rain cap over the top. it can't adequately dissapate the heat inside the enclosure. You might be able to rig up an exterior grade fan for your enclosure to allow it to cool. But your test of running the Stenner without the enclosure cover in place suggests that the enclosure is preventing adequate cooling.

The Stenner technical support people are easy to deal with. You might call and discuss with them.

You could add a couple of Battery Box Vent Covers to the enclosure to ensure that it circulates enough air to keep the motor cool. One top, or top side and another in the bottom of it.

I had the exact same problem when I installed and ran mine for the first time. I installed mine in a very well ventilated (but still somewhat constricted enclosure)...much more open than yours. I ended up taking off the entire bottom and most of one side to avoid the problem and still keep the sun protection that I wanted. And...I also don't run it for long periods during the heat of the day.

I thought I had broken it the very first time I had used it...but its cool-down time was very long, and it recovered just fine. Steve's suggestion of battery vent cover would probably work...until it doesn't, haha.

I like that idea, I'll see what I can come up with. I usually run mine in the morning before it gets too hot. This particular case I noticed the problem because I was trying to test output in the heat of the afternoon.

I think that's what I'm going to do, I've ordered a couple of fans with the louver cover, when they come in I'll see what I can make work.

Change the pump tube to one with a larger output and you can run the pump for a much shorter time, thereby building up less heat.

That's exactly what I did. I'll post pics and links to parts when I get a chance. I think it will work pretty well.

So here are the links and pics. Fan I ordered was based primarily on plug in 110v ac and size. If I could have found one with more airflow I would have, but couldn't find one that met the other requirements. If you look at my other pics, this fan tucks into the upper left corner of the box, right next to the stenners motor fan exhaust. I am pretty sure that this will provide enough flow to keep it cool enough to run under any conditions. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

I vented that existing fan with an exhaust hood that expelled the hot air outside near the top of the case...unimpeded. In addition, I had vent “intake holes” at the bottom of the case and they were probably about 10 times the area of your single vent on the side of your case. At about 30 minutes during the heat of an AZ summer, it overheated.

All the suggestions Steve mentioned are good: run times / tube change / run at night. The fan should help, but based on my fail, I would recommend you add about six to eight 1”+ holes in the bottom of the case to increase the air intake of your new fan. Also, I assume you will run it only when the stenner is running?

The fan is plugged into the same outlet as the Stenner, so when the Stenner is on the fan is on. I added some additional holes to the bottom of the box, but can add more if they are needed. The elbow on the top left was meant to be a vent to let the heat out, but didn't really work that well. Yes my Stenner does have an attached fan. Right now I run my pool pump from 8-12, with the Stenner running about an hour and a half in the middle. I plan to lower that to about an hour (change the chlorine concentration), and that should help. Thought about running the pool pump from 12 am to 4 am, that way the chlorine gets to sit all night with no sunlight eating it.

You must be running with the 3gpd #1 tube for run times that long (edit: at second glance, I realize you could be running #2 tube, your pool is much larger than mine) . I started with the 10gpd tube #2 and am moving to the 22gpd #3 tube. Like Steve, I recommend you increase your tube # to reduce that run time. My stenner runs HOT!...despite being in almost open air. I essentially abandoned my enclosure attempt, my cover now just provides shade and overhead rain protection.

I'll see if my fan mod works, and if not I'll go to the larger tube. It's not so hot here in North TX as it is in AZ
