Needing some POP

I guess I should be in POP mode, but it's been almost 3 days, I've stayed well above my SLAM level of 12ppm, vacuumed and brushed twice and I am still cloudy. It was a crazy swamp to start though. Didn't bother tesring CH.103494

Be aware that if you put in more chlorine than necessary you'll just find that the chlorine disappears faster rather than lingering longer. Anything over the SLAM value is vulnerable to the sun's "tax". Go by your CYA level SLAM amount.

Maybe a bit cloudy still... but I think I passed OCLT. Was at 11 FC, added 1.3 Liters of LC. This morning's test was 17 FC.... still bit of CC though.
Keep the FC high today. Maybe you don't have to be quite so diligent about doing every few hours. A couple hours before dark, make sure the FC is up around 10 or higher and brush things around to mix. Like stirring cream into coffee on a huge scale. Then start the Overnight Chlorine Loss Test right before bed using the 25 ml sample.

It's annoying to wait, but we have seen it so much here.... people end the SLAM a day or two early and then they start posting again in a month complaining that it's green again. An extra day now could spare you an extra week later. Just get 'er done now so the rest of the season will be troublefree.

You are close now wait for the knock out punch. Look for any areas where algae can hole up, light niches, ladders etc. Do you use a pool vaccume system with hoses if so expose them to the high FC to avoid reintroducing contaminants after the SLAM.

Waiting for more reagents, so can't afford a 25 ml test ;) Being in Canada sucks, takes forever to get Taylor stuff... and costly. I have been vacuuming with the same hose, do you mean vacuuming when FC is highest (a bit after dosing)?

As long as you are using the hose it is being exposed to the high chlorine. If anything was in the pool prior to the SLAM and not cleaned it could reintroduce algae after the SLAM.

This question is for Richard320. Can you please explain what you said above about people ending the slam a day or two early and then a month later the pool is green again? I can understand if you are not keeping your FC up and your numbers in line, but can you please elaborate for us newbies? I am getting ready to end a friend's pool slam and now you have me worried.

Thanks,
Lyd

It's exactly that. they end early. There's three tests to pass to end a SLAM.

The CC test is pretty straightforward. Did one drop clear it or not?

"The water is clear" leaves a lot open to interpretation. It might be clearer than they've seen the pool since they bought the house, but that doesn't mean clear. True story: last year someone reported the water was clear --- there was just a few patches of algae in the corners! Is it still clear after brushing? Oh. Can you see the main drain? Can you see it clear enough to count the screws holding it down? Clear is very subjective.

Passed the overnight test. You'd think that one would be straightforward, yet people fudge on that all the time. How? How about measure FC and add enough bleach to get to 16 before bed without letting it mix and retesting. Maybe it went to 16.5, or 17? They'll never know, now. And in the morning, it's 15. Did it pass? Can;t tell, since nobody knows for sure what the starting level was. Or they measure FC before bed, but get up and make breakfast for the kids before they test again. And the pool has lost 1.2. Did it lose 1.2 overnight, or did it lose less than 1 and the rest happened after sunrise?

What happens is they're sick of the SLAM -- it's been six days or whatever. So they call cloudy clear and justify the failed OCLT. There could still be algae lurking behind the light or beneath the steps and it comes back after a big party or something that caused FC to drop too low. And then the thread gets started saying "green again"

Does that clarify things?

I think I'm the one who reported the algae in the corners! : ) My SLAM took a few days, including some rain but the process definitely works and has my pool in the best shape it's ever been. It was confusing about the clear water because I did have sparkling water (and some algae)...being new, I wasn't sure if clear water would eventually take care of the algae in the corners or if it had to be fully removed during the SLAM. Until it's all gone, it's not complete. I followed the 3 tests above and brushed like crazy until the OCLT passed. It definitely takes patience, some elbow grease and a bit of focus but it's well worth it in the long run. The SLAM doesn't guarantee clearness forever, just at the time of completion, when management and maintenance have to take over. I've been religious about testing and adding and haven't had an issue since. It's all about the ongoing testing and adjustments, for me.

Passed the OCLT with flying colors!
Tested at 10pm, FC of 15 (added LC at 830pm, stirred)
FC at 15 this morning with no CC. Should I do a final backwash tonight maybe? Pressure is maybe 10% over normal.
Not the best pic (should've turned pump off), but it's clear! Yes, that is reading correctly... 65. Time to salt up and fire up the heater soon.

So I finally got my resupply and topped up my CYA, raised the TA (tested 60 today?) and CH.

My question, should I have waited til the FC drifted down before adding CYA? Was at 9.5 this afternoon. Haven't turned on SWG yet, but fired up the heater.105424

You don't have to wait to add CYA. You can fire up the SWG whenever the salt level is good, and then adjust the settings until it is able to maintain chlorine at your target level. You are fine to turn on the SWG while the FC is elevated so you don't drop below target while you are making adjustments.
