which test kit?

Hi everyone
long time reader and only second/third time poster

Please, I need some advice on which test kit to use. First time pool owner as of march 2018

It's a residential pool, in hot phoenix, AZ. Temp is 90 right now. Pool approx 20k, inground.

I saw the link that show the tf100 will provide more tests, but I really don't know. The wife and I are the only swimmers, pretty much ever weekend.

Any advice would be great!

Pools need regular testing and maintenance no matter how many people swim in them. Ultimately, you get what you pay for.


I got the tf100xl because I had a swamp to start the season. If you have clear water, the XL isn't necessary. Everyone loves the speed stir. I don't have it, but it's still nice. The biggest thing for me was downloading PoolMath. In conjunction with a solid test kit, algae doesn't stand a chance in my pool.

TF100 is the better value. Get the speedstir.

You may want to get the CYA and some other standard solutions to practice on.

You have a SWG and need to do salt testing?

sorry to get off topic ( i just ordered the kit) and will start a new thread if need be
But the bottom of my pool appears to have a thin layer of dirt that keeps coming back when i brush every morning.
Could this be dead algae?

hi the water is crystal clear beside the annoying brown dust and/or algae that is always on the steps and sometimes in the shallow end
 
When you get your test kit post up a full set of test results.

It is likely the 'dust' you speak of is dead algae. I doubt your pool is as clear as what you will soon see using TFP methods.

To update the signature, go to Settings, upper right of this page, then Edit Signature, left side of page.
 
There is no K-2006C XL.

There is the K-2006 (not enough reagents)
There is the K-2006C (too much of some of the reagents you do not need)
There is the TF-100 (a good amount of reagents as it was designed for the TFPC)
There is the TF-100 XL (just adds extra chlorine testing reagents which are needed if you are starting with a green pool).

The TF-100 is the best value and the one I would recommend.
The SpeedStir is a contraption that swirls the water for you making the testing easier ... I also recommend this.

I have a hose and weighted vac head, and I just vacuum to waste when I need to. It's a cheap, but effective solution.

Your side note is confusing. Do you own a Hayward pressure side vac? Or just have the pump and plumbing to a dedicated return in the pool?

You need something to clean the bottom of the pool. It could be:

- Manual vacuuming through the skimmer suction
- A pressure side Vacuum like The Polaris 380 that I use
- Or a robot cleaner

There is a section devoted to Pool Cleaners

No reason to. Vacuuming to waste will just dump out water.

You will need to clean your sand filter occasionally to get rid of what the cleaner has suctioned up. Note your clean filter pressure and clean the filter when pressure rises by 25%.

updated signature with vacuum info.
Was not sure as I read I would need it to get rid of dead algae.
I run the cleaner everyday for 8-10 hours

I run it on 3 different speeds throughout the day and keep note of what the pressure is on each speed.
