Just wanted to weigh in here. I basically have two choices for pool salt in my area. The local pool store $15.00 a bag, or Wallmart which only carries the Clorox at $5.30. Since my pool was overrun with rainwater ALL my salt was gone and to get it back up Pool math says I need 1,018 lbs of salt. That's 25 bags!! Walmart price $132.50. Pool store price $375. So yeah, I went with the Clorox. Instead of just dumping it into the pool I pre-dissolved it in a big tub and added it as "liquid" - had no staining issue. But I should also note I have soft water and no iron which may be playing a part with why some people are getting stains.

How are you testing your salt? Rainwater would not reduce the amount of salt. Did you dump water so it doesn't over flow?

Water softener salt from a major hardware store chain (HD, Lowe’s, etc) will work just fine. Water softeners are damaged by iron contamination so softener salt has to be high purity. It’s typically coarse salt and it runs about $6-$7 per 40lbs bag.
Sorry, I should have been more clear. It wasn't just "rainwater" I had flooding which basically sent a river of mud into, and out of my pool. Had to do a lot of vacuuming to waste so what little chemicals were in the pool to start with were dumped away. As for how I'm testing...
1. I have a SWG that reads salt - although it's currently saying there is no salt after adding 8 bags yesterday.
2. I took a sample to the pool store (which said after 8 bags I'm at 1100)
3. I'm using salt strips which say I'm at 740.

Yeah, I thought of that, but the nearest HD, Lowes is very far away, and I've heard it doesn't dissolve quickly. Since I'm not getting any staining, and the Walmart is 50 miles closer than the HD, I'm using it.

I use water softener salt when I refill pool. Takes about 10 minutes to dissolve.
Walmart carries it here. But not sure in your area.

Can you post a picture of what water softener salt you use? I want to make sure I looking at the right thing. Found this at Lowe's 40 lb. $5.98. I'm thinking of buying this from Lowe's. Any recommendations? Shop Diamond Crystal 40-lb Salt Pellets at Lowes.com

The one you linked too is compressed pellet. It will work OK but normal coarse water softener salt should work too.

Just adding to the list of users that have staining problems with the Clorox Pool Salt. I first noticed some staining a few months ago and attributed it to the aluminum screened cover (pool cage) over my pool. There was a loose screw on one of the beams and thought rust may be dripping from it. The stains were easily removed with ascorbic acid. Had a few more episodes - all removed with the ascorbic acid. Yesterday, I added pool salt and this morning, sure enough, there were stains. I finally realized that the salt was the culprit. I started using the Clorox salt a few months ago and prior to that time, I've never had any other brand of salt cause a stain. My SWG is 9 years old.

Since Clorox pool salt is made from fracking waste water, I don’t want that in my pool!

Added 8 bags of the clorox salt today my wife purchased from Lowes. Immediately brushed each bag in after adding it in the shallow end. Came back to the pool an hour later and the rust stains are all over the shallow end of the pool. Did a search and found this thread. Never knew there was a known salt staining issue with clorox. We have a vinyl liner pool. I guess we will be trying the vitamin c powder now.... Lesson learned -- water softner salt from now on. Do your self a favor and steer clear of the clorox salt.... Hopefully the vitamin c works....

Well I just took the time to read the report cited in the post above mine regarding clorox salt and fracking wastewater. I am amazed they can even sell this stuff given the source it is derived from. I can't believe a trusted household name like clorox would even want their name associated with such a product... The odd thing is the salt had a nasty odor I smelled when I opened each bag. No salt I have ever used before had an odor. Probably a waste of time but I'll be sending an email to clorox today...
Sam's Wholesale has it in stock. I put 3 bags in last week and haven't noticed anything unusual...yet. I'll watch it though. It's hard to mess up salt. If your pool's PH is correct the stains on the bottom will usually go away.
Not a Leslie Pool fan in the slightest but there salt is the bomb. Little pricier like anything you would ever buy there but I like the salt.
Why pay double for something that is just ground up a little more than solar salt? The solar salt already dissolves too fast for my kids who like to play with it.
