Hello,

Pool was finished early August last year and had about 6 weeks before closing for winter. Used strips for testing and pool store for testing. Never had consistent readings from either so I ordered a Taylor 2006C test kit and used it for the first time this past week.
Need advice on results.
Pool opened 4/26/17
Test results:
4/27/17 @10am
FC 4
CC .6
pH 7.0
TA 150
CH 200
CYA 45
Salt 2930
Water temp 57°

4/30/17 @6pm
FC 5.2
CC .2
pH 7.2
TA 150
CYA 50
Salt 2930
Water temp 64°

Did overnight free chlorine loss test and these are the results:
5/1/17 @9am
FC 5.8
CC. 2
pH 7.2
TA 160
CH 170
CYA 90
Salt 2930
Water temp 64°

I know the TA is high. How do I lower it besides aeration? I have a SWG and I also have a pool slide i could turn on for aeration. pH is on low end too but adding Borax to raise it will also said TA.
Last year I had a hard time keeping FC level up so I was prepared to have to SLAM it figuring there was algae problem. Do any of my results indicate I need to do that?
Also last year CYA was always about 50 and it started that way this year. But this morning it was at 90.

Haven't turned on the heater just yet..don't think I'll be swimming for a couple of weeks. But if you think the cold water temp is affecting any of the readings, I will turn it on.

Any assistance would be appreciated!

Welcome!

Congratulations on taking control and buying a good test kit. :goodjob:

Question: Did you remember to shut off the SWG for the overnight test? Because something is wrong. FC would not go up from 5.2 to 5.8 otherwise. Also, CYA wouldn't climb unless you added more or misread the test.

Don't sweat the TA and pH. I suspect pH will rise quick without any special effort on your part, and when it hits 7.8, you can knock it down with acid and lower TA at the same time.

I did not turn off the SWG. There's so much I have read on here..must have missed that. I will retest. Do I test this evening again and them again in the morning? We are supposed to have strong storms tonight and may not be able to get out to test.
I questioned the CYA test too and had my sister look at it. She read what I read.
I have low vision (blind in 1 eye, floaters in other) and spend a lot of time checking the color changes etc. Should recheck that also? Last year I could never get it above 50.

Thanks so much.

That CYA test can be a real pain. If you try the search box for CYA testing techniques, you'll likely be overwhelmed. But there is a lot of discussion about it.

A few key things. Bright light. I hold the viewtube with just thumb and forefinger because even a couple other fingers on the tube mess up my readings. Pour it back and forth and take multiple readings. Many people find that staring at the dot sort of burns the image and confuses things. Try filling to a certain level, look away, and then glance back. If you still see the dot, dribble some more sample in up to the next level and try again.

If you still can't get steady readings, you might want to buy the standard solution. It's a fixed 50 ppm. You adjust your test method -- lighting, distance, whatever, until you consistently get 50. Then use that same technique when testing your pool water. TFTestkits.net
