Hello, thanks for the videos on you tube about the BBB method. I've watched a number of them. I'm curious about getting started. I usually shock every week using granular chlorine and having the pucks in the chlorinator and weekly dose of algaecide. You might say the conventional pool store methods. Now, what should be my new approach. How do i know i much bleach to add and how often (daily or weekly). Are the pucks totally out the question.?

R,

Welcome to TFP... A Great resource for all of us that have been Pool $tored... :snorkle:

In the last three years I have never added "Shock", Algaecide, or any other product sold by the pool store!!!

There are four ways to chlorinate your pool...

1. Using chlorinated 3" pucks... We do not recommend them, and you have discovered why..
2. Manually add Liquid Chlorine or plain Bleach on a regular basis. Usually daily or ever other day.
3. Use a Stenner pump to automatically add Liquid Chlorine or bleach.
4. Use a Saltwater Chlorine Generator (SWCG) to convert the salt in your pool into chlorine.

You ask "...Are the pucks totally out the question.?" Well, that depends on your CYA level. If your CYA level is low then you can use pucks, if your CYA level is too high already, then using pucks will just compound the problem.

If you had one of our recommended test kits, you would know the answer to the question... I recommend the TF-100 or the Taylor K-2006C.

Welcome to the forum!

The problem with pucks is that they also add CYA, aka stabilizer, to you pool. As these CYA levels accumulate (they do not evaporate/dissipate), it will drive up the chlorine levels needed to keep your pool sanitized.

FC levels need to be managed daily if you manually dose. I'm going on my third season following TFPC and spend 5 minutes a day testing and dosing with bleach. My CYA level stays consistent all season and I use about 4ppm a day of chlorine. My pH has stayed rock solid at 7.4-7.5, and once a week I vacuum and run a full set of test results.

At TFP, we foster self testing and chemical maintenance, as nobody will care for your pool better than you.

Are you you looking to take control of your pool yourself, and save some money while you enjoy your pool?

Yes, chlorine level is set based on the CYA level in the pool. Keep FC above minimum at all times.

For vacation it depends how long you're going to be gone. If it is a few days then raise FC up to shock level. If longer you can raise FC to shock level and float so excited trichlor pucks in a floater. Or have somebody add xx amount of chlorine per day. Or if you have a saltwater chlorine generator or a Stenner pump you just leave. :)
