the pool and the water temp drops to 55. Should I continue or will it do any good with the temps going down into the 30's tonight? Yes it was in the high 70's when I started the process....

Keep at it. The algae will slow down due to the cooler water, but it doesn't go away until you kill it.

I would continue on with it. The reactions will slow down but it'll still happen. You don't want to lose ground by stopping because it'll be getting warm again soon and if you allow the algea to gain ground you'll have to use even more chlorine to kill it back to where you were.
