Hello, All-<br><br>My wife and I wound up in her family home some years ago. A raised ranch built in 1958, it featured an inground pool with a stone patio surrounding it. We were told it was made of wood, but did not know what that meant until it started to collapse late last year. There are substantial areas of cave-in along the long sides of the pool, now really a pond [after MANY years of neglect by the previous owners.] We've had a permanent population of bullfrogs in there, occasional ducks, a snapping turtle and a mink. Question is - which is more expensive, or practical, filling it in or trying to salvage it? It's a highly desirable feature, but clearly may not be worth it, since it'd have to be excavated, some shoring up done to surrounding hillside, etc. Attached is a pic, which is a blurry shot of the mink in motion, but gives some idea of the condition in the background. oooh, more pics! more pics! Are you sure its not fiberglass? Something about the flat blue lip under the coping makes me think it could be?
Welcome to TFP! Never heard of a wood pool. Pic looks like fiberglass. Hard to say whether it's worth salvaging without more info and/or pics. If you are serious about salvaging, it wouldn't hurt to get some estimates.
here are some additional pics. it appears to have had a plywood and 2x4 frame with a vinyl liner. surprising it lasted over 50 years. evaporation and a leak from one of the return lines inside the house caused the water level to drop sufficiently to allow the frame to start to collapse.

I can't imagine building a new pool with a wood frame, so I would not even think of continuing to use a pool with a 50 year old wood frame. Just IMO.
