Pros
Don't have to buy and haul liquid chlorine/bleach and add it every day or two.

Cons
Upfront cost
Possible degradation of natural stone coping, if you have natural stone coping.

There are other benefits from having salt in the water but you can add salt to any pool water to get those benefits. I have natural stone coping and saltwater and after 3 years I have no regrets. Saltwater chlorine generation is an extremely convenient way to chlorinate a pool.

I am very happy with my Pentair IC40. It costs a little more to replace the cell because it has onboard electronics, but that also gives you new electronics. It also only adjust chlorine percentage in 20s. But, my swg is on its own timer so I can set runtime and percentage to easily dial in the chlorine level. Also, Pentair is a very robust SWG and seems to have less issues than other brands.

The overall cost of salt vs bleach is about a wash over time.

Here is and article about SWGs from Pool School.
