Do I need to "isolate" my sand filter from the system to deep clean?

I want to deep clean (or at least rinse the sand in) my Hayward S200 sand filter. Do I need to isolate it from my system if I have an inground pool and the filter is above ground? If so, how do I do this? (I will need very simplified instructions. The multiport on my S200 is on the side.)

I think if you just set the multiport to waste or off it will close the ports to the sand filter. Then nothing can get sent out the wrong pipe.
