Which robotic ??

I purchased a home last year with an in-ground pool. See my pool profile information. I have spent probably 5 hours online reading reviews. Too much of what is now on Google are simply advertisements, and of course are biased. Here's a synopsis of my pool cleaning "history":

1. House came with a Polaris 380. Did not work well. Prior owner never read manual from what I could see and I needed to fix/repair many issues with this cleaner. Bottom line: spent too much time in one area of pool, became tangled too often, was greatly affected by cold weather with poor performance. I ended up donating this to a new pool store.

2. Read a lot about robotic pool cleaners. Decided to try the Maytronics Dolphin Triton. It is a nice looking unit, that is easy to put together and get into pool & use. It is easy to clean the mesh filters and that part of the advertising is accurate. It does not consistently scrub the pool walls and it will go along part of the wall at the water level and then fall back into the pool. My pool is gently curved so there is no reason for this to occur. It will not climb up pool steps despite being quite broad in dimension. It will not clean the in-water pool "bench". it will spend more time in the deep end than in the shallow end. Bottom line: I will return the Dolphin Triton since I have had it for less than 30 days & purchased via Amazon.

So what Robotic Pool Cleaner does what it is supposed to do in the ads? I called a company called "In the Swim" located in Chicago. I have never spoken to a more inept bunch of people in
my entire life. They had no first hand experience or feedback regarding any of the robotic cleaners that they sell. All they could do is recite the info (possibly hype) of the brochures that they had sent to me.

Does anyone have recommendation for an outstanding robotic cleaner? I am not concerned re the price but want a unit that cleans all the pool, walls, steps if at all possible and that is easy to clean and maintain (and will do leaves in fall & pollen in spring).

Is there any unit out there or should I simply buy a cheap cleaner and hire a pool "guy" to come out once a week in the summer or do it myself?

Help anyone?

Welcome to TFP!

Based on your post this is an amazingly easy one to answer. If you want to be dazzled, get a Dolphin Premier M5/M500 in your pool as fast as possible. One thing. No matter what cleaner you buy, you'll have to brush off your steps and shelves. None will do this well on their own.

Stephen,

Sounds to me like your Dolphin is working just like it was designed. I have three of them and they all work basically the same. They do not go up the wall on every trip, but rather about one out of four times. When they do go up and clean the water line tile, they stay there about 30 second to a minute and then fall back down. Over time they cover the whole pool. I am more than pleased with the units I have and would buy another one tomorrow if one should fail. None of mine will clean steps or benches. I don't have any experience with other cleaners, but my guess is that none of them will.

I can only speak to what I have owned unfortunately. I have been an Aquabot guy for close to a decade and prior to that I had a Dolphin. Very similar in construct and capabilities. I could be wrong for thinking this way but I feel that Hayward is a specialist in parts as well as pumps and filters. I wouldn't consider them for a pool cleaner BUT that could be ignorance on my own part.

Stephen,
When I read Jim R's reply above, I had been thinking the same thing. It does sound like your Dolphin is doing what it is supposed to do. Can you elaborate on that? Is the pool clean when it is done, except for the bench and steps? I, too, am under the impression that nothing out there promises to do those. I'm considering a Dolphin and would like to hear more about how it is working for you.

Patrick,
Thank you. I spent another few hours today with calls and internet searches. From the reviews I have read none of the robotic cleaners will do steps or benches so I will leave this issue out of the equation. I read below the comment that the water line is dealt with intermittently and that is further reassuring. The pool looks clean. It may be that after reading the other reviews the Dolphin Triton is actually better than many others. I will look into the Dolphin model noted by you. Thanks again.

I spoke to a person in my locale that maintains a large community pool and she complained about all the repairs and associated costs with the Aquabot. She is currently using a Dolphin Triton and is happy with that model.

Jim,
Thanks. Your input is reassuring and also informative re realities vs my expectations.

Neefer,

With the input from this forum, I can say that the Dolphin Triton is now being viewed by me in a more "gracious" light. I will check on the reviews for the Dolphin Premier M5/M500 as mentioned by Patrick.
