Skimmer ports in ground pool - Can i plug drain port?

I have determined one port goes to drain on bottom of pool. Can I just put a plug in this for the summer? I am working out issues with return line leak. If I can plug this it is just one less thing to consider.
I believe I have an underground leak either in skimmer line or return outlet line.

When you say "port" do you mean a pipe? Does it have a valve you can close? Got a pic?
