Adding valve to intake

I want to add simple ball valve to my above ground pool's intake port but not entirely sure how to connect hose to it.
Intake has female thread where I thread my hose adapter. I'm guessing thread 1.5" diameter although it measures slightly above 1.8". I have bunch of these adapters (see pic) so I'm guessing it's no problem to glue a valve to one of them. Question is how to will I connect my standard filter hose to the valve? Just glue short piece of PVC pipe and attach hose as usual with clamp?

the easiest way would be to just buy a ball valve with the 1.5" threaded end and a normal hose fitting on it, like this

You can also buy a screwed valve and attach a hose barb x screwd end fitting. I buy the threaded fitting so I can reuse them if I reconfigure. Valves and unions are a little pricey and I hate to throw a good one away.
