Adding DE to sand filter?

I read about how you can add some DE mixed with water into the skimmer to increase the sand filter's ability to catch small stuff. So I did that, it took a cup to increase the PSI by 1 lb.

Do I need to add DE each time I backwash? IE does it get washed out when I backwash? Any other tips?

Yes, it needs to be replenished. It forms a superfine layer on top of the sand. In relative terms, like putting window screen over chicken wire. Expect your pressure to rise fast and need a backwash.
