What is this part?

Been having issues for weeks with sand in the pool (45,000 ish) new Pentair triton 2 filter. Popped the cover off tonight and found this on top of the sand. Is it part of the filter?

That appears to be the screen that goes on the air relief hose. There should be a hose in there to let the air out of the filter automatically instead of having to open a valve on top of the filter to purge the air. That screen keeps the hose from getting plugged up.

Thanks. Will that cause problems with sand in the pool?

Without it sand could get pulled through the hose and back to the pool. The hose could also get plugged up and have to be cleaned out or replaced which would require removing the sand to get to where it attaches.

That's an aerator intake strainer! Oh wait, we're not on the boat forum are we!

As said above it's the air relief strainer. It's #8 in this parts breakdown.
