Hello, been told I can add muriactic acid directly to the pool pump, backwash it into the filter, allow it to sit for a while, backwash out and the sand will be cleaned. No need to replace sand. is this true? If so, how much acid should be added and how long should it be allowed to sit in the sand before backwashing it out? Thanks!

Follow the instructions in the link pooldv provided. Once you open the top, you will see how much needs to be done to your sand. Muriatic is NEVER a requirement and I would not use it
I think doing that would be a very poor choice. Bad for the pump and everything after it, especially a heater.
