Can muriatic acid be used to clean a hayward sand filter?

Hello, been told I can add muriactic acid directly to the pool pump, backwash it into the filter, allow it to sit for a while, backwash out and the sand will be cleaned. No need to replace sand. is this true? If so, how much acid should be added and how long should it be allowed to sit in the sand before backwashing it out? Thanks!
Hi, I have an inground 16X32 vinyl pool. My filter is a Hayward Pro-Series and I'm sure very dirty. I have been told that muriatic acid can be poured directly in the pump, backwashed into the filter, allowed to sit for a short period of time and this will suffice in cleaning. Please let me know if this is safe for the pump and filter, how long it should stay before backwashed and how much acid should I use. Thanks!!

I found a thread on this subject from 2012. Muriatic Acid

Might still be applicable. I would be cautious. Others will probably chime-in as well.

Don't know about MA to clean a sand filter, but here is a link about Deep Cleaning a Sand Filter

Follow the instructions in the link pooldv provided. Once you open the top, you will see how much needs to be done to your sand. Muriatic is NEVER a requirement and I would not use it

I think doing that would be a very poor choice. Bad for the pump and everything after it, especially a heater.
