How often should I be cleaning my filter?

I have a 10,000 gallon above ground pool and a 75 gpm pump in a newly set up pool. We have been running the pump continuously. How often should I be cleaning the filter? How often should I be replacing the filter?

It sounds like you have a cartridge filter - might want to add that to your signature. We recommend cleaning pool filters when the pressure rises 25% from the starting pressure of a just-cleaned filter. For example, if your starting pressure with a clean filter is 16 PSI, you would clean when it reaches 20 PSI.

It's time to replace it when the filter shows signs of cracks, punctures, becomes distorted, or cannot be cleaned thoroughly.

A good test kit is an investment, not an expense.

I usually give mine a garden hose spray down three times a season depending on how bad it looks or how much is making its way in there. Pressure is the indicator but I would rather take the hour and rid myself of the gunk.
