Why don't they make chlorine tabs with no CYA ?

Never thought about it much or researched it. Is there such a thing as chlorine only 3" tabs? If not, why not? Seems like something that would make life a little easier.

Well, there are a lot of threads that discuss this exact question .... try the search

Simply, it would violate the laws of chemistry.

There is DCDMH which is like bromine tabs except with chlorine only (bromine tabs are normally BCDMH with one bromine and one chlorine or sometimes DBDMH with two bromine). However, this is not generally available and it would build up DMH in the water. DMH may not behave quite like CYA but it will build up and at some point may affect disinfection/oxidation rates. We don't have info on the detailed equilibrium constants for it so don't know when it becomes a problem nor how much is needed to protect chlorine breakdown from sunlight or if it does that well. Too many unknowns to recommend it.
