Backwashing DIRECTLY into my pool...WHY???

So, we are new pool owners trying to figure everything out 1 day at at time. Our pool has 3 return lines..we have 1 which we think is the overflow drain? Whenever we backwash...water spews into the pool from this line (it is not submerged..) Any ideas?? Feeling stupid:shaking:

Maybe they plumbed your backwash line into your overflow line. Seems silly, but possible. Does the pipe lead out in the yard or anything? Or is it all going back into the pool?
