Lowering Water Level (DE Filter)

If I use the WASTE option on my filter to lower the water level do I need to add DE or does this bypass the filter? We've been getting some rainstorms around here and pool seems a little high. The last time I backwashed but then had to add DE. Its not that expensive but trying to find a way around it..

The waste setting bypasses the filter. You'll only have to add de if you backwash.
