    Sand question/problem with haward filter

Moved into a house a couple of years ago. Existing pool. Last summer was the first we had use of the pool and I noticed I'd clean the pool but a day later it was dirty.
I later realized it was sand.

I did some research and figured the sand was either worn down or a lateral was damaged. I decided to wait till this spring to do it myself.

Up here in Canada, the pool stores are selling nepheline syenite. I was worried about it but on the site others who said it seemed ok and I figured it must be.

So... Open the pool after changing the lateral complete assembly with new sand following the directions of filling with water first...

Ran the pump for a few hours and noticed sand... Quite a lot.
I was having pump problems after turning it on with keeping it primed. Therefore I'm not sure it actually backwashed a lot and the rinse for sure was not enough...

However, the amount of sand in the pool is excessive so I'm wondering if the nepheline syenite has too small grains... Seemed I could pass then through the laterals when I was installing it

    Help!?

    Thanks

So I fixed the pump issue.

I backwashed and a lot of sand was in the clear glass jar that is supposed to be clear.... Is this indicative of something?

Clean the pool and then let us know if it continues to put sand in the pool AFTER you just backwashed it. Maybe that settled the sand bed down some.

    Ok. Will do. Thanks!

I filled it with the nepheline syenite in the amount it stated for silica sand.

Went back and edited my post when I found out the stuff you used is NOT a synthetic. My bad.

Could it be the selector assembly?

Re: Sand question/problem with haward filter

So I'm still getting sand in pool.... Should I set filter to re circulate for a couple of days to see what happens?
If there was a cracked pipe could it be pulling in sand/dirt?

    Thanks

    Update
I put filter to recirculate which should bypass filter but I'm still getting extremely fine grit type sand/dirt and worms and stuff on the bottom every morning...

I'm totally confused... Could I have a crack in an underground pipe?

You should not be getting any sand in the pool on recirculate. sounds like your multiport-valve is malfunctioning.

    Hi,
    Thanks.
It actually seems like dirt or the sand from the ground... I'm worried an underground pipe is cracked and sucking surrounding dirt in.... Is that possible?
It's not the same material I think that's in my filter

No expert here but that seems doubtful since I imagine all underground lines to the pool are pressure lines which would preclude being able to suck in any contaminates.

Re: Sand question/problem with haward filter

The material in the filter is nephaline syenite which they sell here in Canada at pool stores... It's not looking like this in the bottom of the pool...
    I'm stumped

I think the sand is from one of the pipes going to the returns underground. It seems I might be losing a small amount of water as well

Attach a sock to the return with a rubber band. If the sand is coming from the plumbing, the sock will catch it and you'll know. It might also tell you which length of pipe if it is an underground leak. But if the sock stays empty and clean, it's something else.
