I thought my woes were gone as this has been the longest I can keep a solid flow (raised the water level) I've replaced the cap gasket, drain plug on filter (was leaking) tightened the drain on the basket. Thank you for the article. The I can't see a vortex when it's running, in fact it doesn't seem to move much water at all.
the problem is very simple......You are sucking air from somewhere from the skimmers to the pump........ the solution is sometimes hard to find.
For an air leak that "lets go" that fast, I suspect it is at the skimmer.
Post someone at the pump, then go to the skimmer and observe what happens when the pump breaks prime......I think you'll see it.

My skimmer weir was broken and not letting in water causing the same thing... Took ages for me to figure it out
