Question in ground to swim while pump is on?

I hope this isn't a stupid question, but I read it might be unsafebto swim while your pump is running. But our pump runs a) our waterfall and B) our (diy solar coil) heat system. As a kid I swam in our above ground (doughboy) all the time with the pump on and nothing ever happened. So what's the deal, is it safe?

Any properly made in-ground pool is fine to swim in while the pump is running. Some above ground pool should not be used when the pump is running, mostly Intex pools.
