    Cant reduce High pH level

So I've been trying to reduce my pH level if 8.0 by pouring in the amount of muratic acid the pool calculator suggests. For some reason, the level will not drop. Can my testing agent be bad?

Re: Cant reduce High pH level

You will just have to repeat the process. Double check your your numbers in pool math and make sure they are all plugged in correctly and you have MA set to correct percentage.

Re: Cant reduce High pH level

When I question my test kit, I usually run a test off of tap water to see what kind of readings I get. Granted I don't know exactly what I should expect out of my tap water, but usually see enough change to know my kit is ok.

PH drops about 3yrs old. Reason why I question it.
I've checked every time and it shows the same results. I'll check tap water ph and see what it says. Thanks scon36

The drops may be bad then.

So I tested the tap water and it's showing about 7.0 is that about right? Drops can still be bad?

If that is the highest the PH test reads your PH could be much higher.

8.0 is the highest. You're saying it's probably way over 8.0?

Re: Cant reduce High pH level

I think the R-0004 drops you are using are fine and you simply need to add more acid.

That said, three years is too long and I suggest you upgrade all your chemistry that is three years old. It is penny wise and pound foolish to chase pool chemistry with very questionable reagents.

EDIT: and, yes, aimee is right. Your pH can be higher than 8.0 which would explain the additional acid.

Re: Cant reduce High pH level

    Sweet I'll try that.
And yes that's one of few that haven't been used up since I bought the kit. Its been really stable at 7.6 for 2 years. I used a lot of pucks to raise the cya so could that be the reason why pH rises so much?

Re: Cant reduce High pH level

Yes it could be way over 8 which is why your additions of chemicals (MA?) don't seem to be bringing it down. If it were me I would keep making adjustments per pool math, let circulate for a while repeat test and repeat with chemical adjustments.

On the drops being bad, I can't comment but I do know on that test you could be way over 8 if that is the highest it reads.

Re: Cant reduce High pH level

Somebody may have a better answer than me on this but I'd want to know it had had time to circulate. I think I'd wait in the 30 minute to an hour range.

Re: Cant reduce High pH level

AimeeH has it right on it could be much higher than 8. Keep adding per pool math until it comes into range. 15 min should be good, MA integrates quickly.

Thank you all for your help! Put 8.2 in the calculator and added what it suggested. Its now sitting at 7.6. Perfect
