I found this excellent forum last year about three weeks after we put in a new liner, water (25,000 gallons) and filter (Star-rite System 3 cartridge, high efficiency, runs 24/7 mostly at low rate with two 2-hr high rate periods/day). I wish I'd found you just a few week's earlier, because we followed the pool shop's recommendation to continue using bromine. The shop had built the pool 20 years ago. We bought the house as a foreclosure but the prior owners used the pool for maintenance, so aside from a very old liner and 20 year old filter that needed to be replaced, the rest of the system was in decent shape.
I was able to use this forum's advice (lurking) and we had no issues with the pool last year. It was easy to maintain (albeit expensive) and we were able to keep the bromine levels at 4 ppm for the duration of the summer.
We opened it last Monday, and it was light green. It wasn't a swamp, but it was clearly green. Pool company opened it, did the chemicals using a Taylor FAS-DPD Complete Bromine kit, K-2106, which I also use) and they said 0 bromine, all other levels in range (7.4 pH, can't recall TA).
I looked on the forum to try to find the correct bromine levels for SLAM and originally found a post saying that the SLAM level for bromine should be 12 ppm. That's 3x our normal level, so I thought that sounded correct. Later on, I found a post recommending that the SLAM level use the Pool Math assuming a low CYA. That FC was expected to be about 10 ppm, or 22 ppm for Bromine (10*2.2.). So I upped it using bleach.
The pool is coming along. It looks better- it is clear, especially the shallow end. The deep end still has a green tint to it. I had the bromine at 22 ppm last night and this morning it was 17 ppm, which suggests that there is still algae, yes?
We have a Dolphin that vacuums twice a day, and I brush down the pool once per day. We have two lights but we would need to get in the pool to remove them. We'd like to avoid that! Husband just put in the ladder yesterday. The water temp was 75F degrees when we removed the winter cover but has been between 64-68F since.
Can you provide some guidance? Am I using the correct shock levels? I am coming up on a week of maintenance and it's still not ready. I am not sure if I need more patience, bleach, or both?

In the meantime, any guidance is appreciated!
