Do I need a skimmer valve??

I am installing a new Hayward TriStar Pump which requres 2" pvc. My current PVC is 1.5", so i am having to put a couple of reducers on to match the size.

In doing so I am running out of room with my skimmer line. My inground pool does not have a main drain and only one skimmer line that leads into the pump. I would like to take off the skimmer supply line valve that leads into the pump. Is there a need for that valve? I dont really see the point since I only have one line running into the pump.

If the pump is above the pool waterline ... and not WAY above (like many feet). There there is no reason to have a valve on the single suction line.
