Clorox Strength same as Pool Store?

Does Clorox have the same percentage of chlorine as the liquid shock at the pool store?

    Welcome to the forum John!

Usually Pool Store liquid is 10-12 percent. Clorox, or other stores brands are 8.25%

Some off/cheap brands that don't list percentage are lower, like 3-5%.

While I agree with Patrick_B, it should be noted that chlorine has a really short half-life and the more concentrated, the quicker it begins to degrade to a lesser percentage. I've often wondered if fairly frsh 8.25% from the grocery store isn't about the same strength as 12.5% from the local pool store, given the time of stock rotation......

Considering price per unit volume, pool store chlorine is MUCH more expensive than the grocery store variety.

Sodium Hypochlorite is storage temperature sensitive as well. Degrades more quickly the warmer it is stored, and as ewkearns said, over time.

Date codes on bleach bottles are a second language that's worth studying. Most are easy to decipher. Not sure if this is still valid on current containers but post is not that old.

See this post for tables showing how quickly the concentration drops for 12.5% chlorinating liquid and for 8.25% bleach at different temperatures. The actual degradation rate also depends on the quality of product since trace metals can significantly accelerate the degradation rate.

Very roughly speaking, the degradation rate is 3-4 times higher for every doubling of concentration and it's roughly 2 times higher for every 10F increase in temperature.

Ok, that's what I was looking for. I've been using the powder lately and it seems to work better. Thanx

Well, that's a whole other subject. What powder? Can you tell use what it says on the container?

It likely has some side effects you are not aware of. Why do you think it works better?
