running the pump

Hi there,

Newbie here with an older gunnite pool. I'm wondering if I need to run the pump day and night or if I can get away with something less. Do I need a check valve in line to shut the pump off for extended times or should it prime itself again?

3/4 hp pump, sand filter.

Thanks,

Captain Canada

Hi Captain,
Welcome to TFP.

To answer your quetion, NO, you dont have to run the pump day and night. You only need to run it enough to skim the water. If you have a saltwater generator, then you'll also have to factor in how long you need to run it to make enough chlorine.

In ground pool pumps are self priming. They should not need a check valve.

here is a handy write up about pump run times.
