Powdered Shock

Is there a way to tell how much a bag of powdered shock will raise the FC and CYA in a pool?

I'm thinking i could use the bag of shock to raise FC and CYA up and not have to buy stabilizer. Just curious how much it will raise CYA. I'm not really concerned about the FC part. I just dont want to overshoot on the CYA number.

Certainly! Use Pool Math and the section at the bottom of the page that says Effects of adding chemicals​. Make sure you have your pool volume in the table above.

I did. But I think I just answered my own question.

53% Cal Hypo is on the label of the HTH powdered shock I have. Pool math says it wont add any CYA. Just FC and CH and of course salt.

I thought all tabs/shock had CYA in them? Maybe i've been confused all along.

Not all shock/tabs have CYA. Depends on the actual chemical formula.

Trichlor is chlorine and CYA, but less CYA than dichlor per chlorine/FC. Cal-hypo is Calcium Hypochlorite so calcium and FC. Bleach is well... just hypochlorite and sodium.

Powdered chlorine products:
Trichlor: FC + CYA, usually tablet form
Dichlor: FC + CYA, usually powder form
Cal-Hypo: FC + CH, tabs or powder
Lithium Hypochlorite: FC + Li, powder
