Severe pool problems or pool ineptitude

Re: severe pool problems or pool ineptitude

The key to keeping things simple and under control is to never let the CYA level get as high as it is now. Normal CYA levels are between 30 and 50. As JohnT pointed out, with high CYA levels you need astounding amounts of chlorine.

Think about which chemicals you have been using contain CYA and replace those chemicals with alternatives that don't have CYA in them. Otherwise you will just get into this same situation again.

Your CH level is high, but manageable. As long as you keep your TA level reasonably low, say between 50 and 80, you should be fine with that CH level. With a little care to keep TA low you can manage CH levels up to perhaps 1000 fairly well.
