Do you stucco the backside?

The entire back of my island is going against the fence, Do you need to stucco it or just leave the hardiboard exposed?

Stucco would be a great idea. There are several other options, but one way or another, something to cover it.

Reason for this is im trying to avoid buying an extra bucket of dryvit just for a small area. The backside would actually take the most coverage. Its going to pushed against the fence and will never be visible unless the fence is torned down or we pull the island out.

Yes. Hardi can and will absorbe water.

Yes, like the others have said the Hardi needs some protection.
