pump replacement

i need to replace my 25 year old original doughboy single speed pump - i'd like to go with a variable speed PMM pump - the pentair superflo vs 342001 is appealing (i'm currently wired for 120v plus it has a nice user interface) but the energy star database shows that this new improved model is 1/3 as efficient as its predecessor (the 342000) - i spoke to someone at pentair but he was unable to explain the difference in performance and in fact did not seem to know what A-curve data was :0( does anyone have any experience with this pump?

I think it is the error in the measurement at low speed so I wouldn't be too concerned about that. They both should be about the same efficiency.
