Converting to Saltwater

My husband and I are fairly new at owning a pool. We are wondering what it would entail to convert our pool to a saltwater pool. We have a gunite pool which was probably installed back in the 1970's. We have some pretty old metal pipes (one which broke on us last year and is finally getting fixed properly as we speak). We were told that we should upgrade our piping to the now standard 2" (or 2.5" whichever is the standard now) pipe. We also have a really old pump. We were told by one of our pool guys who has been doing pool work for about 15-20 years that he has never seen a pump like ours. And this pump is so loud, we're thinking the bearings might be bad? We are also noticing some sand coming into the pool from one of the jets. So we know that our entire system probably needs to be replaced pretty soon. We also have to resurface our pool due to the fact the pool filled so much with snow this year (we have one of those elephant covers) and we had such a deep freeze in February (in Michigan) that the gunite is pulling away from the wall. Right underneath our tile line on one side has pulled away and some has broken off the top. We seem to be having issue after issue with this pool (we just moved in a year and half ago...).

We are thinking about converting over to saltwater when we resurface the pool and re-pipe next spring (or when is the best suggested time to do this?). What exactly would something like this entail? Would we need to just do a whole upgrade on the whole system completely? Is it ok to switch to saltwater with a gunite pool?

Any help/advice is much appreciated. Thank you!

After making the repairs, there is no problem switching to a saltwater chlorine generator (SWG).

You just install the cell and flow switch in the return plumbing, hook up some power, and add a bunch of salt to the water.
