Is it common for stairs to rust? I just noticed mine are starting to, is there an easy fix?
I'm hoping someone has a suggestion on this. The stairs are only 8 months old. Is this a chemistry issue I'm not addressing or just bad stairs?
Actual rust is iron oxide. I suspect this is just some kind of rust colored stain. Have you tried to clean it?
If you can get the "rust" areas dry, try rubbing some Elmer's Glue on the "rust." If it turns black, it IS iron oxide and is also now neutralized. Acetal Acetate is Elmer's, and it reforms rust. At any rate, if it turns black after curing, it is now easily scraped off the stainless steel and some steel wool to polish after, should finish nicely.
You can buy the Acetal Acetate in gallon jugs at Grainger's it's marketed as "Rust Reformer" and it's great. Turns the rust black, and leaves a great primed surface to paint. Of course, you don't want to paint stainless steel but you get the drift.
