    Replace Coping

Purchased this house/pool last fall and trying to get it ready for the summer. I have about 20 coping tiles to replace and a pool crack to repair. Is this a DIY job? Is there a tutorial? Where can I purchase 12" Safety Grip Bullnose tiles in Michigan (I'm not opposed to ordering online)? Any idea what color these are?

Tutorial for fixing a crack in the pool?
    Thank you

    Thanks.

I've found a lot of useful information on this site. I just can't figure out where to get the coping locally or what color it is...off to search some more.

I've seen some people post links to places to buy coping online, but can't remember! Hopefully they will be along to help.

    Re: Replace Coping

Stores and stone suppliers that sell stone for landscaping and construction usually supply PBs with coping.

That looks like regualr red brick bullnose to me. Its fairly common. May not be in stock at a stone store, but they should be able to find it for you.
If I were you, thats who I would go see. If possible also, take a coping stone with you to show them. Or at least some good pics with dimensions.

I was able to find tiles that were a close match at Southfield Building Supply.
What type of mortar, thinset and grout should I use? Can I get it at Home Depot or Lowes?

Ever start a "simple" project and then realize that you're in over your head?

I started removing the cracked tiles then found out more were bad then i thought, about 80. Some came up by hand. The mortar/thinset under the coping disintegrated as soon as the coping was removed. The small crack on the pool wall under the coping spread over the winter and became a large hole.
I only have issues on this one side of the pool. There are 2 open in-ground dirt planters next to the pool and I suspect causing drainage issues. We plan on redoing the cobble stones and pool in 2 years, removing the planters.

I'm going to continue with the repair myself, just bought the house and a pool redo is not in the budget. Any advice (other then call a pro) would be much appreciated.

If you look at the area between the hose on the wall you will see where part of the crack was. Now it's a spot that needs to be filled. Part of the crack was about 8ft long and 2 inches below where the coping was. When I removed the coping that 2inches fell off the pool wall. So I need to also repair about 8ft x 2 in under where the coping should be.

Yeah. Just about every time I pick up a hammer.

If you're planning on redoing the pool and deck in a couple of years anyway, would it be possible to simply make a plywood form around the edge of the pool and pour concrete slabs. Give yourself expansion spaces every 12" - 18" inches or so and forgo the complicated and costly project of replacing the coping stones. It might not look pretty but would be a functional and cheap, temporary fix.

    Just a thought.

If I had a dollar for every time I told my wife that there's no way we're buying a house with a pool, I'd have enough money to install the pool that came with the house we bought!
