Just picking up this thread as we have today had hydraulic oil tipped into our pool .. how will we know once mopped and chemicals added that the water will be safe to swim in ...

Start by getting as much out as you possibly can. Often it can be skimmed off the top, or picked up by special oil absorbent pads some auto parts places sell. Once you get the quantity remaining down to something reasonable, chlorine will break it down, though that process takes a while, probably a couple of weeks. You can speed that up by using an enzyme treatment. Pool Perfect is a good product, and there are several others that are similar. Often they are advertised as helping break down sun tan lotion.

What kind of hydraulic fluid? How much? I would suggest you find out what kind and find the MSDS (material safety data sheet) for it. The MSDS is intended to provide workers and emergency personnel with procedures for handling or working with that substance in a safe manner, and includes information such as health effects, first aid, and spill-handling procedures.

In the U.S. we have pads that are oil absorbing, while also being hydrophobic. They will absorb oil, but not water. If you can find them, they might be helpful. A safety supply company, or industrial supply house may have them. The ones like these I've seen are always white. Dark Grey or Black-ish colored ones are usually hydrophilic as well, so don't get those.
