Please forgive my ignorance, I have been doing a lot of reading and just have a quick question. From what I read, once you get your salt level where you want it (2800-3800 or so), you really shouldn't have to add salt unless for some reason you lose pool water out of the pool (leak, splashing, backwashing, etc.). Is that correct?

Yes, rainwater overflow is the main reason for salt loss for us. You will not lose any salt to evaporation.
check with your salt water generator. mine low is at 2100 and at 3400 it will turn off to
protect it self. as for adding salt I might put two 40 bags in during a summer if I start
at 3200. occasionally you loose some during a backflush or running your vacuuming to
waste.

Also you don't need "pool" salt, regular solar salt for water softeners is fine. Instead of dissolving in 10 minutes it may take 30, depending on water temperature. Save the money, upgrade your beer.
