Maybe I haven't done something right, but I have selected "instant email notification" in general settings and it doesnt notify me at all. I have only a few posts so maybe that has something to do with it.

The e-mails sent by the forum are sadly not at all instant. They are typically delayed by an average of half an hour. They also have a habit of getting sent into spam folders, if your mail provider offers spam folders.
