How do I go about removing heavy scaling?

I just had a customer referred to me because they have significant scaling on their steps. I haven't seen the pool yet, but I want to at least have some idea how to treat it before I make a recommendation to this customer.

The pool is a vinyl liner pool with fiberglass stairs. The scaling was described to me as being "like barnacles".


My gut is telling me muriatic acid might be my best bet.

Any thoughts?

I' wait to see it before I decided. Scaling on vinyl would have to come from highly saturated high CH water.
