Do I remove multiport/spider gasket or set to "winter"

When going over the winterizing steps I see that it states to remove the multiport/spider gasket (not sure how I missed that in past years). This is the third year I have closed the pool. I have never removedthe port before, just set the filter to "winter".

What is best?????

I have never removed it either. I just turn it to land between 2 stations so the water can trickle out and not freeze in the valve.

Also on the side of mine there is a drain nut.

Thanks. Yep, got the drain nut. Although the first year I did it wrong and got a whole bunch of sand coming out. oops.

You must of blew thought the skimmer and inturn it went through the sand filter then the valve.

Nope, starting to need the peepers to see and didn't see there was two parts to the drain plug. I went for the biggest "nut", unscrewed it and got sand.
