Buying a pool/hot tub from a local pool store- haggle?

Hi all,

We bought our Intex Ultraframe 20' used from friends two years ago for $150. We made all the classic first mistakes, and some un-classic mistakes, and read volumes here (all very helpful!). We are hooked and vow never to be pool-less again. However, the Intex now has 6 patches on the bottom and seems to be disintegrating before our eyes (it had 3 seasons with the previous owners). We are looking at getting a Radiant above ground next spring, and also a hot tub in the next month.

Question:

When dealing with a local pool store, with either above ground pools or hot tubs, is one expected to haggle/negotiate or pay the posted price? We don't want to pay too much, nor do we wish to be clueless jerks.

I'd say it's worth a try. If you have more than one local pool builder/store, get multiple quotes. Use them as leverage with builder of your choice. Many places will line item major components such as pump, filter, cleaner, etc. Make sure they are not far off of what you can find yourself online or elsewhere. Generally pool stores will charge more for components but they shouldn't be marking them up excessively.

We have a 16ft Intex and we just finished our 3rd season with it and are looking at a Radiant pool for spring as well! What size are you looking at? We have considered a buried 18x32 freeform model but will probably end up with an above ground. The concrete and fencing for the inground freeform certainly shoots the price up!

From experience, some will accept haggling but you need to note how they accept the haggling. Some will cut their margins, while others will exchange inferior plumbing/hardware to get their price down. Get your quotes, see what is being used, then negotiate.
