Backwash valve o rings

My pool is leaking through the Pentair 2" backwash valve. I am replacing the o rings in the valve. Found a "You Tube" video that's pretty self explanatory. Only question is do I need to entirely drain the filter before removing the piston shaft of the backwash valve?

Any water in the filter above the pipes to the backwash valve will need to be drained or it will come out when you remove the shaft.
