SLAMming at the end of the pool season?

I've read a few posts over time where people say they have, or have plans to, SLAM the pool at the end of the swimming season. If it isn't experiencing any problems, it just going to get colder, algae doesn't grow much in cold weather, etc., what's the rationale for doing this procedure? Is it different for salt-vs. non-slat pools?

Because that is what the closing procedures in Pool School say to do ;)

You will not close your pool, so it does not apply to you. When someone shuts the pool down for the winter, they need to start at a high FC level so it will last the winter. So, by a limited SLAM you make sure that there is nothing already in the water and give a better chance of opening to a clear pool in the spring.
