Do I need to close/cover my pool?

Long story short, bought a house, opened the pool and it needs a new liner and we may not even keep the pool Due to budget restraints (paying for a wedding). Do I need to even but a new cover and close/cover it? Living in South Central PA, I know the water (which there isn't much in there, maybe 18 inches TOPS) will freeze. I just don't want a collapsed pool in the middle of winter that will need to be picked up.

With that little water in it, I would think covering it would be more problematic since you don't have anything to support the cover with.
