Has a pressure side cleaner ever cause damage to pool plumbing?

I'm curious if anyone has ever heard of or experienced any damage to return line plumbing, either with or without running a booster pump? I have been considering a Polaris 280 with a booster, but I have a 40 year old pool and I am worried about putting alot of pressure into my return line plumbing.

I haven't heard of a cleaner damaging a pool but given the price of energy and where it is likely to go, I wouldn't even consider a cleaner with a booster. Not when there are plenty of really good cleaners that don't require boosters like ThePoolCleaner.
